Writing this a few days after the summer fete was held in the amenity
field behind The Chequers, my feet, back and brain-fog have just
about recovered from what was a very busy but enjoyable day.
Apart from it being a bit windy which tried to send the tea and cake
marquee towards Cockayne Hatley, we had perfect weather for the fete
and doubtless this contributed to the large number of people who came
and enjoyed the day. We opened with music from Sandy Ukulele
Band who were having such a good time they didn’t want to stop
playing! The fun dog show followed with a lot of talented and
adorable pooches, making our judge Daisy Burgoine’s job even
harder. We then finished in the central ring with a tug of war which
saw tough competition in both the under 12s and 12-16s classes.
Over on the Tea and Cakes Stall, we ran a hotly-contested cake baking
competition with Victoria Sponge and Lemon Drizzle categories for
the adults and Chocolate Brownies for the bakers aged under 16.
Prizes included a number of generously donated kitchenware from
TV’s Bake-off. Near the entrance we exhibited the entries for the two
children’s colouring competition groups (under 10 and over 10) with
art competition prizes for the winner.
Around the field we had a lot of different side shows and stalls, from
village organisations, the Goodwill Fund and local vendors. We had a
number of new attractions this year including an ice cream van, The
Chequers beer stall, Chester the Floppy-eared Pony, Airsoft target
shooting, Tim Bees, hand-made crochet items, wand-making and face
painting. Unfortunately Simon the owl man was unable to join us as
he was having a delivery of 24 rescued owls that day, but we jiggled
everything up so the other stalls had a bit more space.
A huge thank-you to everyone who supported the event, by buying
raffle tickets, baking cakes, donating items for the white-elephant, and
well as all the Friends of Goodwill who helped setup the fete and clear
the field afterwards, distribute programmes and sell raffle tickets, and
21
man the stalls. Big thanks to all the local businesses who kindly
donated raffle prizes (see the separate list that follows), and thanks
also go to John at The Chequers who supplied the PA, marquees and
opened up the beer garden for our use which gave us more space in the
field.
All in all it was a hugely successful day and we are delighted to report
that we raised £2,400 for Goodwill funds.
Thank you all.
It’s your Goodwill Charity Fund
Every year we support the 4 villages of Wrestlingworth, Cockayne
Hatley, Eyeworth and Tadlow with Goodwill gifts to newborn babies,
new arrivals in our villages or following a hospital stay. We have
regular events such as the Pensioners Tea Party, Santa Run and of
course the ‘ambulance’ service that provides transport to doctors or
hospital appointments to anyone who needs one (contact Margaret
Pantry you need to use the service - see useful numbers at the back of
this issue.)
We have supported specific things in the villages like equipment for
Wrestlingworth Lower School and the defibrillator for Eyeworth
Village Hall.
But we are always open to other ways of giving support to our
community. Whether someone is experiencing hardship and needs
some financial support, or there is a community project that needs our
help, please do let us know. We can only help if we know where help
is needed.
And to that end we are extending the application deadline for our
resource award that supports young people starting the next step of
their education (whether that is college or university) with a grant to
buy books or equipment. If you would like to apply please
contact geoffrey@wrestlingworthgoodwillfund.org.uk.
